Looking at the specs and measurements, the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM Lens vs. Canon EF 500mm f/4.0L IS II USM Lens comparison shows the 600mm weighing slightly less (push your jaw back up) but measuring more. The 600 has electronic manual focusing and a 1-stop-higher-rated IS system (5 vs. 4). Your experience is needed, please: Do you use the 2x extender III on the 600mm 4.0 IS II lens? How does the 2x extender affect the image quality. I like to shoot small birds, that are often far away. For this, I recently use the 1.4x extender and the 7DII. But often, the cropped picture is to small in my opinion. Compatibility: Canon is quite vague here, and says: "The Extender EF 1.4x III is compatible with most telephoto and telephoto zoom lenses within Canon’s flagship professional L-series range, extending the focal length while only reducing the effective aperture of the lens by one stop." Fully agree. I started last year with the Sigma 150-600 c, I even had the Sigma 1401 TC. Both performed pretty well, but the lens is big and heavy. I could handhold the combo, but was a pain. The lens performed better at 550 than 600. I finally moved to the RF 150-500 + RF 1.4 and the combo is amazing. Easily the best lens I have ever owned.
On the excellent EF 500mm f/4L IS USM Lens, I love that lens, is good, not great, but passable. Sadly that said I use my Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports Lens 95% of the time when I need or use a telephoto. I do have the Sigma 1.4x tel-con for it which again is OK, good, not great, but passable. Go get the Canon 1.4x tel-con.
In reply to landscaper1 • Oct 15, 2017. Saw a YouTube video by Milky Way Mike who compared the 1.4x and 2x Tamron teleconverters with the 150-600. The 1.4x performed better than the 2x.
