IMO there's not enough game in legit trading to make it fun and it's very at odds with the constant warfar and high rewards of battle. I like trading like in VC "I go to the wine place and buy wine and sell it at not the wine place, profit, I buy all the jewelry at the jewelry place and sell it at not-the-jewelry place, profit, repeat a few time, there now I can start to play the game!
In general income depends on how well the village, town or castle is doing. Castles and towns partly depend on the villages beloging to their territory. Make sure the villages are not plundered, no village travellers are harrased (bandits or war parties) and for towns also that the caravans are not raided.
You have to get good to win tournaments. Not a guaranteed source of income, until you can reliably win them all, which also requires good armor. People saying they make easy money this way are already good at attacking and blocking with swords. I have easy blocking on, too frustrating for me otherwise.
There's 3 options for passive income. Workshops - just don't be one of those people who makes a thread about "workshops not working", try and use the sesrch function if you have issues, all of the questions have been answered a billion times. Caravans - ties up a companion/family member and is a risky investment, especially if you're at war
Wages add up fast. You don't have to become a vassal as soon as possible. Spend some time questing with a small-ish party of tier 3 troops and you can make tens of thousands. Clearing bandit hideouts and then selling prisoners for the "Need Manual Laborers" quest will net over 10k in payment and loot by itself.
Caravans are a great way for a bannerlord to make passive income. Sure, there’s a hefty upfront cost, but with the right companion in the lead you’ll make the money back in no time. In Bannerlord, unlike previous Mount & Blade games, there are no set companions. Instead, they’re generated with a random name attached to a random title.
